Utö is situated farthest out in the southern part of the Stockholm archipelago and is renowned for its many hours of sunshine. The island offers a lot of diverse activities. You can, for example, rent a bike, paddle a canoe, play tennis, minigolf, beachvolley or boule. The oldest iron mines in Sweden
Mining started on Utö in the 12th century.Today there are traces of the mining era in the deep waterfilled mine holes, the big piles of mine tailings and Lurgatan with its old houses, 18th century, where the miners lived. In the small mining museum, open every day in summer, you can learn about the history of the mines and look at interesting collections from that time.
The harbour and Gruvbyn
Utö has got one of the largest guestharbours of the archipelago; there is room for 260 boats. The big servicehouse, Hamnboden, offers high standard with shower and sauna facilities, toilets and laundry. Here is the harbour reception where you book your camping place and rent a bike. There is also a kiosk and an icecream and a coffeebar. Nearby is the boutique Hamnmagasinet - beauty and good taste combined with functionality.
Overlooking the harbour is the charming Utö Värdshus, which appeals to both seafarers and landlubbers with its genuine archipelago atmosphere and its exquisite cuisine. One of the biggest establishment in the southern archipelago with a gourmet restaurant, hotel and conference rooms, the nightclub Bakfickan and in summer also Seglarbaren, close to the harbour. If you want to enjoy good food, nice company and a complete conference, this is the place for you.
Furthermore there is the tourist office where you can get all the information you need about Utö and islands nearby. Maps and postcards are for sale here and the tourist office also serves as a pharmacy. The office also helps you to rent a house; there are houses to rent from 2 beds to 8 beds. Near he harbour you will aso find Utö Bageri (bakery) and Dannekrogen (restaurant) as well as Utö Livs (grocery), post office, Fisklådan (fish for sale), petrol station, shops with handicraft and canoe rental.
3 km from the harbour is Spränga from where there is also regular ferry traffic, a grocery - kiosk, open during the summer season and the church,Utö kyrka. Beautifully situated at the far end of the bay this church is the biggest church made of stone in the archipelago. It has moreover the oldest church organ in Sweden. Around this bay you'll find the school and the allcountry house of Utö. Most of the permanent residents of the island live here. The south part of Utö is a military firing range but during the month of July the area is open for those who want to go to, for example, Stora sand, a big, beautiful sand beach.
Ålö and Storsand
The easiest way of getting here is by bike past green, luscious meadows with grazing animals, woods, hills and at last Storsand, another lovely, white sand beach. If you instead choose to go to the right at Ålö gård, you'll get to the salmon farm of Ålö and the restaurant Båtshaket. From here there is a regular ferry to Rånö, Nåttarö and Nynäshamn.
Rånö and Nåttarö
With their nice bathing places and sand beaches these island are true pearls of calm and tranquillity. There are houses and camping sites as alternatives for holiday spenders. On both islands there is also a grocery shop open in summer.
